The Combined New York Morning Newspapers
As strikes roil the entertainment and auto industries in 2023, a one-week work stoppage by NYC printers exactly 100 years ago in late September 1923 prompted a temporary "combined New York morning newspaper" joining eight city publications.
The joint newspaper ran from September 19-26 that year. That Sunday, September 23, the front page of the New York Times ran a banner above its usual headlines declaring "THE COMBINED NEW YORK MORNING NEWSPAPERS" in all caps, followed by the logos for the eight publications:
New York American
New York Herald
Sunday News
German-language New Yorker Staats-Zeitung
New York Times
New York Tribune
The World
Italian-language Il Progresso Italo-Americano
The labor dispute would ultimately be resolved mere days later. However, several further New York newspaper strikes would occur a few more times during the next century, including a months-long strike in 1962-63, then again for several months in in 1978.
What happened to each of the aforementioned newspapers?
New York American: merged with the New York Evening Journal in 1937, publishing as the New York Journal-American until it shuttered in 1966.
New York Herald and New York Tribune: both published individually until 1924, when the latter acquired the former to form the New York Herald-Tribune, which also shuttered in 1966.
Sunday News: this was the Sunday-only name of the New York Daily News, which ceased using a different name on Sundays in 1977; the publication continues today as one of the largest in both NYC and the U.S.
German-language New Yorker Staats-Zeitung: they appear to have gone defunct? A 2001 New York Times article described the publication as seemingly on its last legs even at that point, plus their still-online website lists a 1997 copyright date. The catch is, I can't find any definitive confirmation that the publication ended?
The World: continued individually until 1931, when it merged to become the New York World-Telegram, which shuttered in 1966.
Italian-language Il Progresso Italo-Americano shuttered in 1988.
